EBOLA HEMORRHAGIC FEVER, FRUIT BAT - DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, 2007 *********************************************************************** A ProMED-mail post <http://www.promedmail.org> ProMED-mail is a program of the International Society for Infectious Diseases <http://www.isid.org> Date: Fri 29 May 2009 Source: allAfrica.com, ex SciDev.Net [edited] <http://allafrica.com/stories/200905290730.html> Central Africa: scientists find more signs of bats' role in Ebola ----------------------------------------------------------------- Ebolavirus, a filovirus, causes fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, and sometimes bleeding. There is no treatment or vaccine and 25-90 per cent of infected people die. The virus is transmitted by direct contact with infected blood, body fluids, and tissues. The new findings have emerged from data collected in the remote Kasai-Occidental and Kasai provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which experienced a large Ebola [hemorrhagic fever] outbreak in 2007 in which 186 people died. Some members of the research team helped discover in 2005 that fruit bats are a natural reservoir of the ebolavirus. ( Read more... )

2nd amendment rights under assault again!
May. 13th, 2009 05:39 pmThe video I posted prior to this one shows what will happen more and more. US citizens will be taken away with no rights, in secret, and the government doesn't have to answer to anyone. That is as bad as any third world country. This constant eroding of our rights really scares the shit out of me. I'm waiting for the last apple that tips the cart and people start fighting back! Strange that we didn't hear about the boy, in the video I posted prior to this, on the evening news. They know they would look like the assholes and wannabe tyrants they are if it became too widely known what they've done.

The Hunt For Gollum
May. 3rd, 2009 11:39 pmAwesome excellence, this is an incredible short film, made by fans, just watch it, is all I can say.
This fan made film is just awesome. I mean awesome. I just watched it. It's 40 or so minutes long.
The fantastic creations fans are capable of, doesn't faze me anymore.
When I found fannish things on the internet for the first time years ago, I was blown away by the talented group of people that make up the many branches of fandom, no matter what flag they flew over their particular fannish demesne on the internet.
And since that time, I have had the pleasure of watching fandom grow, and expand to cover just about every area of creative endeavors imaginable.
Icons, banners, pictures, drawings, writing, videos. And now, a short film based on a major motion picture has been made, that is a jewel in the crown of fandom.
I sincerely believe that it would behoove the television, music, and movie industries to make use of the talented fans that have an abiding love for their particular flavor of fandom. These industries are ignoring a pool of talent that can refresh and revitalize their stale, tired old ideas.

More than 50 percent of adults in the United States consume dietary supplements, according to experts. Now, a newly launched resource, the Dietary Supplement Ingredient Database (DSID), will help researchers improve estimates of the U.S. population's total nutrient intakes. That's because the DSID was developed to improve estimates of the U.S population's nutrient intakes based not only on the beverages and foods people consume, but also on their dietary supplement intake.
