Amazon policy on LGBT books spurs twitter uprising

Amazon policy on LGBT books spurs twitter uprising

Amazon's official response to the disappearing sales rankings is that it was a "glitch" that would be fixed.
But that explanation seems only to have angered people and sparked calls of homophobia. Twitter users began adding the tag #glitchmyass fuelling even more fire to the PR crisis.

*********************************

This from their terms of use. Amazon is supposedly for adults only. So where does the deranking "adult" books come from anyway? Like the twitter folks said #glicthmyass.

"Amazon does sell products for children, but it sells them to adults, who can purchase with a credit card or other permitted payment method. If you are under 18, you may use Amazon.com only with involvement of a parent or guardian."

From Amazon's Conditions of Use policy.

Stop Time Warner's Internet Penalty

Stop Time Warner's Internet Penalty

Time Warner Cable has decided that the less Internet you get, the better.

Just as Americans are suffering economically, the cable giant is trying to squeeze us even further, forcing customers to pay a steep penalty for exceeding an absurdly low monthly limit on Internet use. Better Internet access is a centerpiece of America's economic recovery plan. Time Warner's penalty is designed to pad the company's profits at its customers’ expense.

Please visit the URL below to join me in calling on Congress to stop Time Warner's unfair Internet penalty:

A Recipe for Launching a Local Broadband Wireless Network

Local Network Cookbook:
A Recipe for Launching a Local Broadband Wireless Network

Introduction:

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes $7.2 billion in stimulus funding for broadband deployment in unserved and underserved communities. This funding will be distributed by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) over the next 12 months. NTIA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce; RUS is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A summary of federal broadband stimulus funding can be found at: http://www.baller.com/pdfs/Baller_Herbst_Stimulus_2-19-09.pdf

Most of this federal broadband stimulus funding is earmarked for nonprofit organizations and government entities. Commercial providers must receive special permission from the director of NTIA. It is not yet clear whether RUS will adopt this funding approach. Grant application windows are expected in June, November, and May, 2010. These are approximate dates until an official request for proposal (RFP) is issued.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local nonprofit organizations -- especially community media centers -- to become Internet service providers and begin developing new revenue streams. It's also an historic opportunity for advocates of Internet Freedom. The proliferation of community-based, broadband networks would be a huge step toward creating the critical "third pipe" alternative to the cable/telco duopoly, thereby generating market pressure to force the major carriers to restore “net neutrality” protections for broadband users.

The broadband stimulus opportunity opens the door to a vision for a new Jeffersonian Internet comprised of a “network-of-grassroots-networks” where civil liberties and quality journalism are valued over Wall Street business models.

"Local Network Cookbook: A Recipe for Launching a Local Broadband Wireless Network" is aimed at helping nonprofit organizations -- especially those already using digital technologies -- move quickly to plan and submit a broadband stimulus funding proposal for one of the three application windows.

The rest is at the link up there. There's also a PDF file copy at the very bottom of the page as well as contact info:) If you're in any way interested in starting up your own broadband carrier service, then this can help. I hope you knoe someone that can use this info:)

Hacker behind #Amazonfail?...errr maybe..maybe not

Amazon goes for 3rd reason lucky over #AmazonFail

LJ user claims he hacked Amazon to derank books

That's [profile] weev posting at [community profile] brutal_honesty today.

I'm not sure what I believe about it, since this deranking has been going on since february. Maybe the hacker helped things along. But That doesn't answer all my questions.

Amazon Says Listing Problem Was an Error, Not a Hack

Amazon Says Listing Problem Was an Error, Not a Hack

Weev's claims are false, Amazon's Smith said.

Former Amazon employee Mike Daisey said that the problem really did appear to have been caused by an employee mistake.

A friend within the company told him that someone working on Amazon's French site mistagged a number of keyword categories, including the "Gay and Lesbian" category, as pornographic, using what's known internally as the Browse Nodes tool. Soon the mistake affected Amazon sites worldwide, Daisey said in an interview. "If you use that tool in one site, it affects every site in Amazon. So the guy screwed up in France and it propagated everywhere," he said.

Daisey, a monologist who spent three years at Amazon, was amused that Weev's claims had been so widely reported, given that Weev has made a name for himself as an online "troll" who lies for fun. "I think it's hilarious that he's gotten as much traction as he has with the story because his whole modus operandi is about pranking people."
